Player Ratings: Athletic Club 0-2 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid have won the first title of the 2021/22 Spanish football season, as they beat Athletic Club 2-0 in the Supercopa final. Their 12th Supercopa title was secured by goals from Luka Modric and Karim Benzema and a Thibaut Courtois penalty save.

Luka Modric opened the scoring early on in the first-half with a wonderful strike from outside the box. Karim Benzema then doubled Real Madrid’s lead from the penalty spot shortly after the break. Eder Militao was shown a late red card for blocking Raul Garcia’s goal-bound header. Thibaut Courtois saved the former Atletico player’s penalty, sealing the win for Real Madrid. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

Saved Raul Garcia’s penalty to earn a well deserved clean sheet.

Lucas Vazquez: 7/10

In for Carvajal who missed the game after testing positive for Covid. The Galician was good moving forward and put in solid performance defensively.

Eder Militao: 7/10

Put in a solid performance and wasn’t tested much at all during his time on the pitch. The Brazilian got sent off very late on after using his arm to block what was a certain goal.

David Alaba: 7/10

Back in the starting XI after missing the semi-final due to muscular discomfort. Real Madrid looked a lot more calm and assured at the back with the Austrian in the lineup.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

A reassuring defensive performance from the left-back. Ferland didn’t put a foot wrong at the back.

Luka Modric: 9/10

Opened the scoring with a fantastic goal from outside the box. The Croatian was at his magical best, controlling the game and showing yet again that age is just a number.

Casemiro: 7.5/10

Provided his defenders the protection they needed while also helping Modric and Kroos keep things moving in possession.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

A typical Toni Kroos performance. The German barely put a foot wrong and was at his creative best, creating chances and registering a 95% pass accuracy.

Rodrygo Goes: 7/10

Started the game after Asensio picked up an injury in training. The Brazilian put in a solid performance, assisting Modric for the opener and causing Athletic all sorts of problems down the right wing.

Karim Benzema: 8.5/10

Doubled Real Madrid’s lead, scoring the penalty that he won. The Frenchman built play with typical fluidity and took his penalty with aplomb.

Vinicius Jr: 6/10

A rather quiet night from Vinicius. The Brazilian was well marshalled by Athletic’s defenders, limiting the winger’s impact on the game.

Substitutions:

Fede Valverde: 7/10 Came on to replace Rodrygo. The Uruguayan added energy and physicality to the middle of the park as Madrid looked to close out the game.

Marcelo: 6/10 Came on to replace Vinicius. The Brazilian came on to play and lift his 23rd trophy with Real Madrid, equaling Gento’s record.

Nacho: N/A Came on to replace Vazquez late on.
