Player Ratings: Villarreal 0-0 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid fail to score against Villarreal for the second time this season as they could only pull off a 0-0 draw at the Estadio de la Ceramica.

Arnaut Danjuma, Gareth Bale and Luka Jovic all hit the woodwork, but neither side could find a breakthrough. Ancelotti’s men will feel disappointed to have not won the match but Los Blancos still have a four-point lead over second-placed Sevilla. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

A quiet afternoon for the Belgian who was barely tested throughout the ninety minutes.

Dani Carvajal: 6/10

A tough afternoon for Carvajal who found it difficult to stop Pedraza. The Spaniard wasn’t all that solid defensively and rarely ever got forward.

Eder Militao: 7.5/10

Solid shift from Militao. The Brazilian made a number of fantastic challenges that helped keep Villarreal at bay and continues to put in excellent performances week in, week out.

David Alaba: 6.5/10

Unlike Militao, Alaba found life a little more difficult. The Austrian had to cover for Marcelo who had a nightmare of a time against Chukwueze.

Marcelo: 3/10

With Mendy still injured, Marcelo was given a rare start. The Brazilian had a torrid afternoon with Chukwueze causing him all sorts of problems. Very poor performance.

Fede Valverde: 6/10

Started in place of Modric who got some rest ahead of the match against PSG. The Uruguayan didn’t have the type of impact that he would’ve hoped for and eventually got replaced by Modric.

Casemiro: 8/10

Back in the starting XI after recovering from gastroenteritis. The Brazilian put in a fantastic defensive shift and was key to Real Madrid keeping a clean sheet.

Toni Kroos: 6/10

An average performance from Toni. The German wasn’t given much time or space to dictate proceedings in the first-half but grew into the game after the break.

Marco Asensio: 4/10

After his brilliant winner against Granada last week, Asensio failed to reach those levels today. The Spaniard was very quiet throughout his time on the pitch and had little to no impact on the game. Lucky to escape a red card after a horrible challenge on Iborra.

Gareth Bale: 6/10

A surprise choice by Ancelotti to use the Welshman as a striker. Gareth saw very little of the ball in the first-half but grew into the game in the second period. Will be disappointed not to have scored having had a few decent goalscoring opportunities.

Vinicius Jr: 6/10

Back in the lineup after serving his one match suspension. The Brazilian looked sloppy and a bit too eager to make things happen in the final third. An afternoon to forget for Vini.

Substitutions:

Luka Jovic: 5/10 Came on to replace Gareth Bale. The Serbian should have scored in the dying moments of the game but his shot came off the crossbar.

Luka Modric: 6/10 Came on to replace Valverde as Real Madrid looked for a winner.

Rodrygo Goes: 5/10 Came on to replace Asensio with 10 minutes remaining.

Eden Hazard: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.

Nacho: N/A Came on to replace Marcelo late on.
