Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-2 Elche – 2021/22

Late goals from Luka Modric and Eder Militao saw Real Madrid salvage a point against a depleted Elche side, snatching a 2-2 draw on Sunday.

Lucas Boye gave Elche the lead just before the break before Pere Milla doubled the visitors advantage in the 76th minute. Just as they did in midweek, Real Madrid found a way to turn things around late on.

In the 81st minute Milla was correctly adjudged to have handled David Alaba’s flicked header from a corner. Luka Modric stepped up in Benzema’s absence and cut the deficit to one goal. Real Madrid then managed to find an equaliser minutes later. Vinicius got the better of Palacios down the left flank and his cross was met by Militao, who rose highest to head past Badia.

The draw means Real Madrid now have a four point lead ahead of second-placed Sevilla. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Not much he could do to stop either goal. The Belgian was let down by his defenders big time this evening.

Lucas Vazquez: 6/10

Poor performance from Vazquez. The Galician had no effect on the game from both an attacking and defensive perspective.

Eder Militao: 6/10

Not the best positioning for Boye’s goal. Militao made up for his poor defensive performance with a brilliant header to salvage a point for Real Madrid.

David Alaba: 6/10

An unusually sloppy performance from the Austrian. Alaba should’ve done a lot more to stop Boye for Elche’s second goal.

Ferland Mendy: 7.5/10

Real Madrid’s best player out of the back four. Mendy put in solid performance both in attack and defence and linked up very well with Vinicius down the left flank.

Luka Modric: 7/10

Scored the penalty that kicked off the comeback. The Croatian struggled at times to create chances against Elche’s resolute defence and look fatigued during his time on the pitch.

Casemiro: 7/10

Hit the crossbar with a brilliant header and put in a decent defensive shift. The Brazilian could’ve done more to help prevent the first goal and should’ve provided more cover for Vazquez.

Toni Kroos: 6/10

Kroos looked a threat from set pieces and came close to scoring with a long-range freekick. The German put in a decent shift but didn’t create much against Elche’s robust defence.

Eden Hazard: 6/10

A decent performance from the Belgian. Hazard started slowly but improved as the game went on but didn’t create any real chances.

Karim Benzema: 5/10

Showed brilliant quality on the ball but lacked the quality he usually has in the final third. The Frenchman missed a penalty before limping off with an injury shortly after the break.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

Real Madrid’s best player in attack. The Brazilian put in a decent shift and won the penalty that Benzema missed. Assisted Militao’s equaliser with a brilliant cross.

Substitutions:

Luka Jovic: 5/10 Came on to replace Benzema. The Serbian saw very little of the ball and didn’t have much of an impact on the game.

Rodrygo Goes: 5/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Brazilian didn’t offer much in attack.

Fede Valverde: N/A Came on to replace Vazquez late on.

Isco: N/A Came on to replace Hazard late on.
