Player Ratings: Real Madrid 1-3 Barcelona – Spanish Super Cup 2022/23

Real Madrid have lost the Spanish Super Cup Final in humiliating fashion, losing 3-1 to a vastly superior Barcelona side.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men showed zero interest right from the off, failing to register a single shot on target until the 70th minute. The lack of energy and pace in Real Madrid’s game was alarming to most people but anyone who’s been watching their last few matches would not have been surprised one bit.

Only one Real Madrid player can sleep tonight and be content with his performance and that is Thibaut Courtois.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

The only player that showed any sort of interest in the game. Could’ve easily been 5 or 6 without the Belgian.

Dani Carvajal: 1/10

Where to start. Simply put, Carvajal’s worst performance in a white shirt. Beyond atrocious.

Eder Militao: 2/10

Dragged way out of position for the second goal and looked clueless throughout.

Antonio Rüdiger: 2/10

Amateurly gave the ball away right on the edge of his box for Barca’s opener. Showed no leadership or experience in helping organise the backline.

Ferland Mendy: 3/10

Put in a decent cross to Benzema in the first-half that should’ve been converted. Barcelona targeted Madrid’s right flank for all their attacks which allowed the Frenchman to watch the disaster unfold.

Luka Modric: 3/10

Back in the starting lineup and it was instantly clear that the Croatian has still not recovered from a long World Cup campaign. Way off his usual level.

Toni Kroos: 3/10

Started as the defensive midfielder in Madrid’s 4-3-3 formation. The German was constantly overrun and proved helpless.

Eduardo Camavinga: 2/10

Another game where Camavinga starts and gets hooked at the break. Showed no energy and added nothing to Madrid’s game. Poor.

Fede Valverde: 2/10

A far cry from the player we witnessed before the World Cup. The Uruguayan had zero impact on the game.

Karim Benzema: 4/10

Missed a golden opportunity in the first-half after a good cross from Mendy. Scored a consolation late on but had another very quiet game up top.

Vinicius Jr: 3/10

Barcelona knew that Vinicius is the only threat in this Real Madrid side and they made sure he couldn’t impact the game with up to four players marking the Brazilian at times. Regardless of that, another poor performance from Vinicius.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo Goes: 5/10 Came on to replace Camavinga at the break. Couldn’t muster anything that would impact the game.

Dani Ceballos: 5/10 Came on to replace Modric. The Spaniard put in a decent shift and created the chance for Benzema late on.

Marco Asensio: N/A Came on to replace Toni Kroos.

Nacho: N/A Came on to replace Carvajal.
