Player Ratings: Real Madrid 1-1 RB Leipzig (2-1 Agg.) – 2023/24

Vinicius Jr’s second half strike sees Real Madrid through to Champions League quarter-finals after a poor showing at the Bernabéu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men didn’t manage a single shot on target in the first half and were lucky to not be behind.

Vinicius Junior gave Real Madrid the lead after a great counter but Leipzig responded quickly through Willi Orban. The visitors had a string of chances but just couldn’t find the back of the net, and Madrid scraped through.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Andriy Lunin: 7/10

Lunin made a number of important saves to deny Leipzig who had a significant amount of goalscoring opportunities. Not much he could do to stop Orban’s brilliant header.

Dani Carvajal: 5/10

Followed up his poor performance against Valencia on Saturday with another underwhelming showing. The Spaniard gave the ball away in dangerous positions far too often.

Antonio Rüdiger: 7.5/10

A commanding defensive display from Rüdiger who threw his body in front of everything in the box. The German made a huge block to deny Xavi Simons late on.

Nacho Fernandez: 6/10

Nacho couldn’t do enough to stop Orban from levelling. The Spaniard struggled with aerial duels and wasn’t very convincing throughout.

Ferland Mendy: 5/10

Just like most of Real Madrid’s defenders, Mendy was far from convincing. The Frenchman offered nothing going forward and wasn’t solid enough in defence.

Fede Valverde: 6.5/10

Started on the right wing which completely nullified his presence and effectiveness on the game. The Uruguayan improved after moving back into midfield for the second half.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

By far Real Madrid’s best player tonight. The German was at the heart of everything positive for Los Blancos and played a major role in the team’s goal.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 6/10

A rather disappointing performance from the Frenchman who didn’t offer his backline the protection they needed.

Eduardo Camavinga: 5/10

Started as part of a midfield five and struggled to make much of an impact. The Frenchman was brought off at the break in favour of Rodrygo.

Jude Bellingham: 7/10

Started with Vinicius up top. Fair to say, that experiment didn’t work. The Englishman dropped a little deeper after the break and provided a brilliant assist for Vinicius.

Vinicius Jr: 7.5/10

Scored the opener with a fantastically taken goal after a brilliant counterattack started by Toni Kroos and Jude Bellingham.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo Goes: 6.5/10 Came on to replace Camavinga for the second half. The Brazilian added pace and directness to the attack but didn’t create a lot of danger.

Luka Modric: 6/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos.

Joselu: N/A Came on to replace Jude Bellingham late on.
