Player Ratings: RB Leipzig 0-1 Real Madrid – 2023/24

Real Madrid earned a hard-fought 1-0 win away to RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter on Tuesday.

A moment of brilliance from Brahim Diaz in the early stages of the second half and a monstrous performance from Lunin in goal propelled Los Blancos to a vital victory away from home.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Andriy Lunin: 10/10

Put in a performance of a lifetime, making a whopping nine saves. He’s only the second Real Madrid goalkeeper to make 9+ saves in a single Champions League game without conceding since at least 2003/04, after Thibaut Courtois in the final against Liverpool in 2022 (also 9). Exceptional.

Dani Carvajal: 6.5/10

Not Carvajal’s most convincing performance. The Spaniard made a number of questionable fouls and wasn’t as solid as he has been throughout this season.

Nacho Fernandez: 6/10

Back from injury and straight into the starting line-up. The captain had a hard time up against Šeško.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 8/10

An impressive performance from the Frenchman who looked like he’s been playing in defence for his entire career. Tchouaméni has played 5 games at centre-back this season and the team has won all 5 of those games without conceding a single goal. Rock solid.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

Mendy didn’t offer much going forward but kept Dani Olmo relatively quiet throughout.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

Valverde put in a shift in the middle of the park, pressing well and chasing down every 50/50. The Uruguayan wasn’t as sharp with his passing but added bite to Madrid’s midfield.

Toni Kroos: 7/10

Toni Kroos started the game a little slowly but improved after the break. The German didn’t look too comfortable in the DM role tonight.

Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5/10

A very solid display from the Frenchman who ran relentlessly and put in the hard yards. Camavinga was the standout performer in midfield.

Brahim Diaz: 8/10

Replaced the injured Bellingham in the starting line-up. The Spaniard was relatively quiet in the first-half before scoring a wonder goal after the break. Came off with a knock.

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10

Another game where Rodrygo really struggled to make an impact. The Brazilian just couldn’t get going.

Vinicius Jr: 7/10

Vinicius was very sharp in attack, stretching Leipzig’s defence and creating chances for his teammates. The Brazilian had a brilliant effort come off the post.

Substitutions

Lucas Vazquez: N/A Came on to replace Brahim late on.

Joselu: N/A Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.
