Player Ratings: PSG 1-0 Real Madrid – 2021/22

A late strike from Kylian Mbappe earned PSG a well deserved 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.

Thibaut Courtois could only keep Kylian Mbappe and co. at bay for 93 minutes, and the Belgian was finally beaten by the French sensation with the last kick of the game. Courtois prevented an embarrassment, saving a number of attempts including Lionel Messi’s penalty.

Los Blancos didn’t have a single shot on target from their three attempts and would’ve been extremely lucky to escape with a draw from the Parc des Princes. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 9/10

Where would Real Madrid be without Courtois?! The Belgian made a number of big saves to deny Mbappe throughout the game before making the all important save to deny Messi from the spot. Unlucky to concede right at the death.

Dani Carvajal: 3/10

A night to forget for Carvajal. The Spaniard was bullied by Mbappe all night before committing the foul that resulted in PSG’s penalty.

Eder Militao: 8.5/10

Real Madrid’s best player alongside Courtois. The Brazilian was unbeatable at the back and key to Los Blancos still being in the tie.

David Alaba: 8/10

Just like Militao, Alaba put in a brilliant shift at the back. The Austrian handled everything that PSG threw his way and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

A decent shift from Mendy. The Frenchman was solid at the back, he didn’t create anything moving forward but that was part of Ancelotti’s plan. Will miss the second leg after picking up a yellow card.

Luka Modric: 7/10

Forced to defend in his own half and help stop Mbappe and co. for the majority of the game which stopped him from creating anything moving forward.

Casemiro: 7.5/10

Put in a very good performance to help out in the battle against Mbappe. Unfortunately for Real Madrid, the Brazilian will miss the second leg after picking up a yellow card.

Toni Kroos: 6.5/10

A tough night for the German. Kroos’ strengths are in possession, something which simply didn’t happen tonight with Madrid chasing the ball all night.

Marco Asensio: 3/10

A tough outing for Marco. The Spaniard barely saw the ball and had no impact on the game.

Karim Benzema: 4/10

Back from injury for tonight’s big game. Benzema’s strengths were not utilised with the Frenchman not being found by his teammates at all.

Vinicius Jr: 3/10

Just like Asensio and Benzema, Vinicius was kept painfully quiet.

Substitutions:

Lucas Vazquez: 5/10 Came on to replace Carvajal. The Galician was skinned by Mbappe for the winner.

Rodrygo Goes: 5/10 Came on to replace Asensio. The Brazilian couldn’t impact the game.

Fede Valverde: N/A Came on to replace Luka Modric late on.

Eden Hazard: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.

Gareth Bale: N/A – Came on to replace Benzema late on.
