Player Ratings: Granada 1-4 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid kicked off a tough run of fixtures with 4-1 against Granada on Sunday evening at the Estadio Nuevo de Los Carmenes.

Goals from Marco Asensio, Nacho Fernandez, Vinicius Junior and Ferland Mendy earned Real Madrid a pretty routine win against the Andalusians, who were simply outclassed by Los Blancos. The result sees Real Madrid regain top spot in LaLiga, two points ahead rivals Sevilla and Real Sociedad. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

Nothing he could do to stop Luis Suarez’s deflected shot. The Belgian made a number of sensational stops in the second-half to keep the score at 4-1.

Dani Carvajal: 7/10

A very good performance from the Spaniard who looks to have put his injury nightmares behind him. The right-back was solid in defence, registering seven clearances and five ball recoveries.

Nacho: 8/10

Unfortunate to have had Luis Suarez’s shot deflect off him and past Courtois. The Spaniard put in a solid performance and was rewarded with a goal.

David Alaba: 7/10

Put in a solid shift and was always alert to any danger from Granada’s counter-attacks. The Austrian formed a good pairing with Nacho and constantly looked to build play out from the back.

Ferland Mendy: 8/10

Put in an excellent defensive shift, as always is the case. The Frenchman is regularly criticised for his abilities in an attacking sense but he showed today that he has what it takes to be a threat further up the pitch. Mendy finished excellently to make it 4-1 after a great through ball from Casemiro.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Another great showing from the Croatian magician. Modric showed great energy and found himself in good positions throughout the game which proved essential to Madrid’s build-up play. Unselfishly assisted Vinicius for Madrid’s third goal.

Casemiro: 8.5/10

Arguably Casemiro’s best performance so far this season. The Brazilian made six defensive interceptions and was flawless on the ball, registering a 94% pass success rate (81/86). Assisted Mendy for Madrid’s fourth goal with a wonderful through ball.

Toni Kroos: 9/10

Retiring from the German national team looks to have greatly benefited Kroos. The German was sharp as ever and was at the heart of everything positive for Real Madrid. Assisted Asensio’s opener as well as Nacho’s goal.

Marco Asenio: 8/10

Looks a different player this season. The Spaniard opened the scoring for Real Madrid and was sharp throughout the game. Arguably Madrid’s best player in attack, especially in the first-half.

Karim Benzema: 7.5/10

Didn’t score but that didn’t stop him from impacting the game. The Frenchman was excellent in Madrid’s build-up play and linked brilliantly with his teammates. Played a big part in Madrid’s third goal.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

The first LaLiga player born in the year 2000 to score at least 10 goals in all competitions in a single season. The Brazilian was a constant threat throughout his time on the pitch and he was rewarded with a goal for his efforts. Brilliant yet again.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo: 7/10 Came on to replace Vinicius. The Brazilian looked sharp and came close to scoring on a number of occasions.

Luka Jovic: N/A Came on to replace Benzema. The Serbian didn’t see much of the ball during his short time on the pitch.

Eduardo Camavinga: N/A Came on to replace Toni Kroos late on.

Isco: N/A Came on to replace Luka Modric. Late substitute.

Jesus Vallejo: N/A Came on to replace Alaba with very little time remaining.
