Mendy is normally known for his good defending but that wasn’t the case at the Allianz Arena. The Frenchman struggled against Sane and allowed him to cut in far too easily for Bayern’s first goal.
Player Ratings: Bayern Munich 2-2 Real Madrid – 2023/24
Real Madrid salvaged a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with a late penalty from Vinicius Junior.
The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in the first half, but his team needed him again late in the game after Leroy Sane and Harry Kane turned the game around shortly after the restart.
With the draw, both teams will head to the Santiago Bernabéu next Wednesday for a decisive showdown to secure a spot in the Champions League final.
Player ratings:
Starting XI:
Andriy Lunin: 6/10
Made one or two really good saves in the first half but was beaten by Sane too easily at the near post. Kane sent him the wrong way for the penalty.
Lucas Vazquez: 4/10
Started ahead of the suspended Carvajal. Vazquez had a tough time against Sane in the first half and an even tougher time against Musiala in the second. The Galician needlessly brought down Musiala to give away the Bayern penalty and was a liability at the back.
Antonio Rüdiger: 6.5/10
Had a decent game when it came to his individual battle with Kane. Rüdiger wasn’t tested all that much.
Nacho Fernandez: 6/10
Vinicius Jr: 8.5/10
Substitutions
Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 – Came on to replace Nacho. The Frenchman didn’t have much of an impact.
Brahim Diaz: 6.5/10 – Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Moroccan caused problems for Bayern’s defence with his pace and directness.
Luka Modric: 6.5/10 – Came on to replace Jude Bellingham. The Croatian’s introduction added some much needed composure to the middle of the park.
Joselu: N/A – Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.
