Player Ratings: Elche 1-2 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid progress to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals after an extra-time strike from Eden Hazard ensured 10-man Real Madrid avoided a humiliating Copa del Rey exit away to Elche on Thursday night.

Real Madrid needed extra-time but Carlo Ancelotti’s men got the job done. Los Blancos were far from their best for the vast majority of the game and eventually went behind after Marcelo got sent off.

Verdu gave Los Franjiverdes the lead in the first-half of extra-time and it looked like Madrid’s run in the competition was all but over. However, Real Madrid are not a team that gives up and they eventually got themselves level through Isco before Eden Hazard went on to win the game right at the death. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Andriy Lunin: 7/10

The Ukrainian’s second start of the season. Lunin pulled off a number of decent saves but there was nothing he could do to stop Verdu’s heavily deflected strike. Unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet.

Lucas Vazquez: 6/10

Far from his best performance. Vazquez didn’t add much to the attack and didn’t have a comfortable time defending either. Unconvincing display.

Nacho: 7/10

Solid performance from Nacho. The Spaniard dealt with Elche’s forward’s with relative ease.

David Alaba: 8/10

Started the game as a centre-back but moved into the left-back position after Marcelo’s sending off. The Austrian put in a great shift and registered an assist for Hazard’s winning goal.

Marcelo: 6/10

One of Marcelo’s better performances despite his sending off. The Brazilian linked up well with Vinicius down the left flank and created a number of decent goalscoring chances for his teammates.

Fede Valverde: 6/10

Not the worst of performances from Valverde but not the most convincing either. The Uruguayan moved the ball forward pretty well but didn’t help create anything of note from the middle of the park.

Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5/10

One of the better performers tonight. Camavinga pressed high at times during the game and wasn’t afraid to try his luck from distance. Solid performance.

Toni Kroos: 7.5/10

A dominant showing from the German. Kroos played a big part in the middle of the park, making sure Los Blancos were effective in their build-up play.

Rodrygo Goes: 5/10

Missed a golden opportunity to score after some brilliant play from Marcelo down the left flank. The Brazilian lost possession way too easily and didn’t add much to Real Madrid’s attack.

Luka Jovic: 4/10

Not a night to remember for Jovic. Having been given an opportunity to start in Benzema’s absence, the Serbian had virtually no impact on the game

Vinicius Jr: 7/10

Despite not being at his best tonight, Vinicius was the only player trying to get things going in attack for the majority of the game.

Substitutions:

Casemiro: 6/10 Came on to replace Camavinga. The Brazilian came close to scoring minutes after coming on.

Luka Modric: 7/10 Came on to replace Fede Valverde. The Croatian’s introduction added spark and creativity into the middle of the park.

Isco: 7/10 Came on to replace Luka Jovic and scored the equaliser in extra-time.

Eden Hazard: 7/10 Came on to replace Rodrygo. The Belgian showed brilliant technique and composure to score the winner.

Dani Ceballos: 6/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Spaniard played a part in the equaliser as it was his deflected shot that Isco converted.

Ferland Mendy: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.
