Player Ratings: Barcelona 2-3 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid secured their place in Sunday’s Spanish Supercup final after a 3-2 win against their eternal rivals, Barcelona.

Vinicius Jr gave Real Madrid the lead after 25 minutes. Barcelona managed to find an equaliser just before half-time through Luuk De Jong. Eder Militao tried to clear a cross but fired the ball right at the Barcelona striker and the ball managed to cross the line.

Karim Benzema restored Carlo Ancelotti’s side’s advantage in the 70th minute. Ferland Mendy crossed from the left and Benzema was denied by Ter Stegen. The ball found a way to Carvajal over on the right flank before finding Benzema who finished with aplomb.

Real Madrid looked to have sealed the win only for Ansu Fati to equalise for the Blaugrana with a late header to send the tie to extra time. Federico Valverde struck the winner for Real Madrid in the first-half of extra time. The Uruguayan fired home after a brilliant dummy from Vinicius to steer Real Madrid through to the final. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Not much he could do to stop De Jong or Fati’s goals. Courtois wasn’t helped out by his team’s poor defending and was crucial to sealing the win late on with a number of great saves.

Dani Carvajal: 5/10

Back in the starting XI after a month on the sidelines. The Spaniard struggled to contain Dembele. Assisted Benzema for the second goal.

Eder Militao: 4/10

Poor game from the Brazilian. Eder didn’t cover himself in glory for De Jong’s goal and failed to mark Ansu Fati for Barcelona’s second goal.

Nacho: 7/10

Nacho was a little shaky at times and the Spaniard was suspect in both of Barcelona’s goals but did make a number of very good challenges.

Ferland Mendy: 6/10

Not the best of games but not the worst either. The Frenchman was particularly average in the first-half but improved after the break.

Luka Modric: 7.5/10

Real Madrid’s best player in the middle of the park. The Croatian showed his class yet again against Barca’s much younger midfield.

Casemiro: 6.5/10

Not the best of performances from the Brazilian. Casemiro was often caught out of position and didn’t offer his back line much protection.

Toni Kroos: 6.5/10

Not Kroos’ night. The German made some unusually uncharacteristic mistakes and wasn’t convincing in possession.

Marco Asensio: 6/10

Asensio put in a decent shift in the first-half, getting into decent positions but his shooting was a little wayward.

Karim Benzema: 8.5/10

The star of the show yet again. The Frenchman assisted Vinicius for the opener before scoring the second of the night and was a constant headache for Barca’s defenders.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

Another fine performance from the Brazilian. Vinicius’ pace and trickery caused Dani Alves a world of problems and Barcelona had no way of stopping him.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10  Came on to replace Asensio. The Brazilian added pace down the right-wing and should have scored what was an absolute sitter with the last kick of the game.

Fede Valverde: 7.5/10 Came on to replace Modric. The Uruguayan made an excellent challenge to deny a great chance for Barcelona late on before going on to score the winner in extra time. Fantastic shift.

Lucas Vazquez: 7/10 Came on to replace Carvajal. The Galician looked sharp and put in a good shift against Dembele.

Eduardo Camavinga: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.
