Player Ratings: Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 Real Madrid – 2022/23

Antonio Rüdiger’s last minute equaliser snatched a 1-1 draw with Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Oleksandr Zubkov opened the scoring for the Ukranian side seconds after the restart. A cross in from the left caught Ferland Mendy off guard, allowing Zubkov to head home with relative ease. Shakhtar Donetsk were on top for a large majority of the game and deserved to take all three points.
Real Madrid looked set to lose for the first time this season but as we’ve seen time and time again, Los Blancos simply do not give up. This time it was Antonio Rüdiger to the rescue. Toni Kroos’ deep cross was headed off the post and in by Rüdiger.
The result means Carlo Ancelotti’s men are through to the knockout stage with two matches to spare.
Player ratings:
Starting XI:
Andriy Lunin: 7/10
Could’ve arguably done better to stop Zubkov’s header but the blame for that goal sits on Mendy. Other than that, Lunin made a number of good saves to deny the home side.
Lucas Vazquez: 6/10
Offered very little in both defence and attack.
Antonio Rüdiger: 9/10
Excellent performance from the German who did a very good job in defence and managed to salvage a point for his team with a brilliant header right at the death.
Nacho: 8/10
Ferland Mendy: 4/10
One of Mendy’s worst performances in a Real Madrid shirt. The Frenchman was all over the place in defence and was at fault for Shakhtar’s goal.
Rodrygo Goes: 4/10
Karim Benzema: 4/10
Eden Hazard: 4/10
Substitutions:
Luka Modric: 7/10 – Came on to replace Tchouaméni. The Croatian instantly improved things in the middle of the park
Vinicius Jr: 6/10 – Came on to replace Hazard. The Brazilian missed a great opportunity to level the score minutes after being brought on.
David Alaba: N/A – Came on to replace Mendy.
Eduardo Camavinga: N/A – Came on to replace Valverde.
Marco Asensio: N/A – Came on to replace Rodrygo.
