Player Ratings: Real Sociedad 0-2 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Goals from Vinicius Junior and Luka Jovic deal Real Sociedad their first home defeat of the season and see Real Madrid go eight points clear at the top of LaLiga.

After a relatively even first-half, Real Madrid came out for the second period with much more hunger and desire than the home side.

Vinicus broke the deadlock just 2 minutes after the break with Luka Jovic registering an assist for the goal after a beautiful one-two between the Brazilian and Serbian. 10 minutes later, Jovic turned from assister to goalscorer. The Serbian doubled Madrid’s lead after Toni Kroos’ corner was met by Casemiro, who headed into the path of Jovic to tap home.

In the end, it was a rather comfortable night for Los Blancos who managed to prevent Sociedad from having a single shot on target. The win means Real Madrid are now eight points clear of second-placed Sevilla. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Thibaut’s most comfortable outing this season. The Belgian had zero saves to make throughout the 90 minutes.

Dani Carvajal: 7/10

Back in the starting XI after being rested against Bilbao on Wednesday. The Spaniard put in a decent shift and made sure Oyarzabal had no impact on the game.

Eder Militao: 10/10

Monstrous performance from Militao. The Brazilian dealt with absolutely everything that Sociedad threw at him, racking up 10 clearances and 5 tackles. Eder’s best performance since joining Real Madrid.

David Alaba: 7/10

Struggled at times with aerial duels but did enough to help Madrid keep a cleansheet. Solid performance from the Austrian.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

A relatively quiet performance from the Frenchman. Mendy didn’t offer much on either end of the pitch which could possibly be down to the knock he picked up in the first-half.

Luka Modric: 7.5/10

Despite reports suggesting Modric would be rested tonight, the Croatian started and played the full 90 minutes. Luka put in a very good shift and looked as fit as ever.

Casemiro: 7/10

Casemiro came into tonight’s game one yellow away from missing next weekend’s clash against Atletico Madrid. From the Brazilian’s performance, you wouldn’t have thought that was the case. Casemiro put in a solid shift and managed to escape a booking.

Toni Kroos: 7/10

A decent performance from Toni but not one of his best this season. Despite completing 62/66 passes (94% accuracy), the German was unusually sloppy from set-pieces but he did make amends with the corner-kick that resulted in Jovic’s goal.

Rodrygo Goes: 6.5/10

Despite putting in the effort, Rodrygo didn’t do much to impact the game. The Brazilian tried time and time again but it wasn’t his night.

Karim Benzema: N/A

Karim Benzema lasted just 17 minutes before asking to be substituted with what looks like a knee injury.

Vinicius Jr: 9/10

With Benzema coming off injured, Vinicius took on the responsibility of leading the line for Real Madrid. The Brazilian put in another brilliant performance, scoring the opener and causing Sociedad the world of problems. Fantastic all round display from a player in the form of his life.

Substitutions:

Luka Jovic: 9/10 Came on to replace the injured Benzema. The Serbian looked a little off colour in the first-half but that completely changed after the break. Luka assisted Vinicius for the opener before scoring a goal himself – his first for the club since February 2020. Excellent performance.

Eduardo Camavinga: 7/10 Came on to replace Casemiro. The young Frenchman added energy to the middle of the park and made a fantastic sliding challenge to deny Isak what looked like a great goalscoring opportunity.

Fede Valverde: N/A  Came on to replace Toni Kroos with little under 10 minutes left.

Marco Asensio: N/A Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.
