Player Ratings: Real Madrid 5-1 Celtic – 2022/23

Real Madrid secured top spot in Champions League Group F by defeating Celtic 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday.

Real Madrid wasted no time in making their superiority felt, with Luka Modric and Rodrygo netting penalties in the first-half to give their side a healthy lead. Celtic were also awarded a spot-kick but Josip Juranovic saw his penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde all scored for Real Madrid after the break in what was a very dominant second-half performance from Ancelotti’s men. Substitute Jota got a consolation for Celtic with a brilliant free-kick late on.

The result means Real Madrid finish top of the group with 13 points, joined by RB Leipzig in the second round. Celtic are out of all European competition and Shakhtar Donetsk have gone into the Europa League.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8.5/10

Brilliantly saved Juranovic’s penalty and made a number of good saves throughout the game. Unlucky not to have kept a clean sheet after Jota’s unstoppable freekick.

Dani Carvajal: 7/10

Ventured forward pretty regularly and was involved in Asensio’s goal early on in the second-half. Solid display.

David Alaba: 7/10

A pretty quiet evening for the Austrian who barely got out of first gear.

Eder Militao: 7/10

Very good performance from the Brazilian who was solid defensively and was excellent in building play out from the back.

Ferland Mendy: 6.5/10

Gave away a penalty in the first-half that was ultimately saved by Courtois. The Frenchman wasn’t as reliable as he usually is.

Fede Valverde: 9/10

Fede Valverde continued his brilliant form this season with another fantastic performance tonight. The Uruguayan assisted Vinicius before rounding off the scoring with a thunderbolt from outside the box. Incredible player.

Toni Kroos: 7.5/10

A routine outing for Toni who didn’t have to do much to impact the game. The German pulled the strings in midfield, completing 97 out 104 (93%) passes attempted.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Opened the scoring for Real Madrid with a cool finish from the penalty spot. The Croatian put in a sublime performance in the middle of the park and came off to a standing ovation.

Marco Asensio: 9/10

One of Asensio’s best performances in a long time. The Spaniard was at the heart of everything positive in attack, scoring a brilliant goal and creating chances for his teammates. Ancelotti will also be delighted with the defensive shift he put in.

Rodrygo Goes: 8/10

Another Champions League game, another goal for Rodrygo. The Brazilian doubled Real Madrid’s lead with a well taken penalty and showed excellent pace and movement to unsettle Celtic’s backline.

Vinicius Jr: 7/10

A rather frustrating performance from Vinicius in the first-half with the Brazilian missing two gilt-edged chances. Vini made amends in the second-half, latching on to Valverde’s cross to finally get his name on the scoresheet.

Substitutions:

Karim Benzema: 6/10 Came on to replace Vinicius. The Frenchman showed good movement and came close to scoring.

Lucas Vazquez: 7/10 Came on to replace Carvajal. The Spaniard assisted Valverde for Madrid’s fifth goal.

Dani Ceballos: 6/10 Came on to replace Luka Modric and looked sharp since coming on.

Nacho: 6/10 Came on to replace Alaba but didn’t have much to do.

Jesus Vallejo: 6/10 Came on to replace Militao for the last fifteen minutes.
