Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-1 Villarreal

Real Madrid win their final game of the season but miss out on the LaLiga title by just two points with bitter rivals Atletico winning their final match.

Yeremi Pino opened the scoring for Villarreal on the 20 minute mark after escaping Alvaro Odriozola and finishing past Thibaut Courtois. Karim Benzema equalised early on in the second-half but VAR ruled the goal out for offside.

Benzema equalised 3 minutes before full time and this time the goal stood. Real Madrid completed the comeback in added time after Luka Modric’s deflected effort found its way past Gerónimo Rulli.

Despite the team’s valiant efforts, Atletico Madrid were crowned LaLiga champions for the first time since 2014 after their 2-1 win at Real Valladolid. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Not much that he could’ve done for Villarreal’s goal. The Belgian wasn’t tested much after conceding in the first-half.

Alvaro Odriozola: 7/10

A decent performance from the right-back. The Spaniard continues to show an improvement in form and will be satisfied with the way he’s ended the season.

Eder Militao: 8/10

His 14th consecutive start. The Brazilian has been excellent over the past few weeks and he continued that with another fine display against Villarreal’s dangermen, Moreno & Bacca.

Raphael Varane: 7/10

His first start after his most recent injury. The Frenchman looked to be lacking in match fitness which is expected after spending some time on the sidelines.

Miguel Gutiérrez: 8/10

Started his third consecutive game. The young left-back put in an excellent performance and was very involved with both the defensive and attacking aspects of the game. Miguel has taken full advantage of the opportunities provided to him by Zidane.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

His energy and tenacity have helped Real Madrid massively over the past few games since his return into the starting XI. The Uruguayan did however find it difficult to really hurt or threaten Villarreal this time out.

Casemiro: 7/10

Came close to scoring on a number of occasions but couldn’t find the right finish. The Brazilian had a relatively routine performance in midfield and that was enough to keep Real Madrid comfortable in midfield.

Luka Modric: 8/10

A rather difficult start to the game ended with a moment of brilliance from Modric. The Croatian wasn’t as influential as he normally has been this season but still managed to make his mark on the game with a brilliant winner in the 92nd minute.

Marco Asensio: 4/10

Very disappointing performance from Asensio. The Spaniard was anonymous throughout and made little to no impact on the game. Poor.

Karim Benzema: 9/10

Real Madrid’s only reliable goal scorer this season. The Frenchman scored on the hour mark but had his goal ruled out for offside. Karim kept trying and eventually got his reward, scoring his 30th goal of the season with a brilliant strike 3 minutes before full time. Benzema then went on to assist Luka Modric for the winner.

Vinicius Jr: 5/10

Just like Asensio, Vinicius didn’t do much at all to help out Benzema in attack. The Brazilian got into decent positions but never looked like scoring.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo: 7/10 Came on replace Vinicius. The Brazilian added some much needed energy and movement to Real Madrid’s attack. Assisted Benzema for the equaliser.

Isco: 6/10 Came on to replace Asensio. The Spaniard didn’t really impact the game.

Nacho: 6/10 Came on to replace Odriozola. The Spaniard was brought on to change things up as they looked to turn the game around.

Marcelo: 6/10 Came on to replace Miguel. The Brazilian tried to create chances with his crossing but couldn’t muster any real chances.

Mariano Diaz: 6/10 Came on to replace Casemiro with 20 minutes to go as Real Madrid looked to turn things around.
