Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-0 RB Leipzig – 2022/23

Late goals from Fede Valverde and Marco Asensio helped the defending champions to a 2-0 victory against Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Los Blancos were far from their best but managed to find a way, as they always do. This time it was down to the brilliance of Fede Valverde.

Vinicius started the move for the opener, crossing from the left to find Valverde who then bent a left foot shot past Leipzig keeper Peter Gulacsi.

Asensio then doubled the home sides lead after being found by Toni Kroos outside the box to make it two wins from two in the Champions League.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

Put in a great shift in the first-half to keep the scores level. A well earned cleansheet.

Dani Carvajal: 7/10

Solid performance from the Spaniard who did all the basics well. Carvajal played a lot more defensively to deal with the threats of Werner and Nkunku.

Antonio Rüdiger: 7/10

Made a number of good interceptions and ball recoveries. Should’ve arguably scored after getting on the end of a brilliant cross from Vinicius.

Nacho: 7/10

Solid performance from Nacho who kept Werner and Nkunku under control. Reliable as ever.

David Alaba: 7/10

Started tonight’s game at left-back. The Austrian went forward on multiple occasions but looked to lack the speed to really make a difference. Definitely more suited to centre-back.

Luka Modric: 7/10

Decent display from the Croatian who was clearly trying not to exert too much energy. Modric was brilliant on the ball and had a few magical moments of close control but didn’t manage to impact the game as much as he would’ve liked.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 7/10

A decent performance from the Frenchman who made a number of very good interceptions. The future is bright with Tchouaméni.

Eduardo Camavinga: 6.5/10

Started tonight’s game ahead of Toni Kroos. The Frenchman was neat and tidy on the ball but often played it too safe rather than trying the riskier more progressive pass.

Fede Valverde: 9/10

Another brilliant display from the Uruguayan. Valverde was all over the pitch and scored the all important opener with a fantastic shot for his first Champions League goal. A very special talent.

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10

Started as Real Madrid’s striker. The Brazilian struggled and never really got going. Well below his usual level.

Vinicius Jr: 7/10

Even though he wasn’t at his best, Vinicius still caused Leipzig a lot of problems. The Brazilian showed great skill and composure to set up Valverde for the opener.

Substitutions:

Marco Asensio: 8/10 Came on to replace Camavinga. The Spaniard had a point to prove after all the drama that happened after not getting brought on against Mallorca. The winger scored a brilliant goal to double Real Madrid’s lead and send Ancelotti a message in terms of team selection.

Toni Kroos: 7/10 Came on to replace Modric. The German assisted Asensio for the second.

Ferland Mendy: N/A Came on to replace Alaba late on.

Dani Ceballos: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.

Mariano Diaz: N/A Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.
