Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-0 Inter Milan – 2021/22

Two stunning strikes from Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio eased Real Madrid past Inter to secure top spot in Champions League Group D on Tuesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Inter were threatening in the first-half but Kroos’ stunner gave Real Madrid the lead before the break. The German collected a pass from Rodrygo on the edge of the box, before using his weaker foot to fire a rocket past Samir Handanovic and into the bottom corner.

The game was all but over around the hour mark after Barella got sent off for lashing out at Eder Militao. Real Madrid were cruising since Inter got down to 10 men and eventually doubled their lead when substitute Marco Asensio scored an unstoppable goal from outside the box with just over ten minutes remaining.

The win means Real Madrid top Group D and extend Inter’s 54-year Bernabéu hoodoo. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Just like the match against Sociedad on Saturday, Courtois had very little to do throughout the 90 minutes.

Dani Carvajal: 8/10

Solid performance from Carvajal. The Spaniard escaped a penalty shout early on in the first-half but didn’t put a foot wrong after that and even went on to assist Asensio for Madrid’s second goal.

Eder Militao: 9/10

Followed up his incredible performance against Sociedad with another brilliant display against the Italian Champions. The Brazilian was a rock at the back and his passing was very good too, so good that the Bernabéu were chanting his name.

David Alaba: 7/10

A decent performance from the Austrian. Alaba did well to contain Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko but wasn’t tested all that much.

Ferland Mendy: 7.5/10

A typical Mendy performance. The Frenchman was solid in defence and did well to help Vinicius in attack.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Real Madrid had less possession than normal which did make life harder for Modric, but the Croatian kept things moving with relative ease.

Casemiro: 8/10

A tireless performance. The Brazilian was in the thick of things and ended up suffering a knock for his troubles.

Toni Kroos: 9/10

Another brilliant performance from the German maestro. Toni opened the scoring for Real Madrid with a stunning strike and was at the heart of everything positive for Real Madrid.

Rodrygo Goes: 7.5/10

Rodrygo tried all night but things didn’t come off for him in front of goal. The Brazilian hit the post on the stroke of half-time and was then denied by Handanovic in the second-half. Assisted Kroos for the opener.

Luka Jovic: 7.5/10

Despite not scoring, Jovic put in a very good shift. The Serbian worked really hard, dropping deep to collect the ball and was constantly on the move as he looked to create space and get into good goalscoring positions.

Vinicius Jr: 7.5/10

A constant threat down the left-flank. The Brazilian caused Inter all sorts of problems and was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty in the first-half.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 Came on to replace Casemiro. The Frenchman looked sharp and tidy on the ball as Real Madrid looked to see out the game.

Mariano Diaz: 5/10 Came on to replace Luka Jovic. The striker missed a sitter very late on.

Fede Valverde: 6/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Uruguayan didn’t see much of the ball since coming on.

Marco Asensio: 8/10 – Came on to replace Rodrygo. The Spaniard scored an absolute beauty minutes after coming off the bench to secure the win for Real Madrid.

Eden Hazard: N/A – Came on to replace Vinicius late on.
