Player Ratings: Real Madrid 2-0 Chelsea – 2022/23

Real Madrid will travel to London next week with a healthy 2-0 win in the bag thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

Karim Benzema gave Los Blancos the lead after a brilliant ball from Carvajal ended at the feet of the Frenchman who finished from close range.

On the hour mark, Ben Chilwell was shown a red card for a cynical foul on Rodrygo just outside the box. Marco Asensio then doubled Madrid’s lead inside the final 20 minutes of the match just 3 minutes after coming on.

At 2-0 the tie isn’t completely over, but Real Madrid will feel confident ahead of next week’s second leg.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

Made a brilliant save to deny Chelsea in the first half and showed yet again just how decisive he is on the biggest stage. Deserved clean sheet.

Dani Carvajal: 8/10

One of Carvajal’s best performances in recent memory. The Spaniard rolled back the years with a brilliant performance. The ball he played into Vinicius for the opener was simply exquisite.

Eder Militao: 7.5/10

Used his pace to recover and deny Felix on the break early on in the first half. A rather comfortable outing for the Brazilian.

David Alaba: 8/10

Made a brilliant interception to deny Chelsea before the break. The Austrian’s leadership and quality at the back significantly improves the team.

Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5/10

A very energetic performance from the Frenchman who continues to impress regardless of his position on the pitch. Camavinga was very involved in attack and wasn’t tested much defensively.

Fede Valverde: 8/10

One of Fede’s best performances since the World Cup. The Uruguayan put in an immense shift defensively and pinged around some brilliant passes. Excellent.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

One of those classic Champions League performances from Toni Kroos. The German didn’t start the game very well but as soon as he got going he never looked back. Dominant as ever in the middle of the park.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Just like Kroos, Modric didn’t start the game very well but as soon as things clicked it was total domination. Came off to a huge ovation.

Rodrygo Goes: 7.5/10

Not as decisive as Karim or Vinicius but Rodrygo did have moments of real quality. The Brazilian was through on goal before he was hauled down just outside the box resulting in a red card for Chelsea.

Karim Benzema: 8/10

Karim didn’t have many goalscoring opportunities but he only ever needs one. The Frenchman opened the scoring for Real Madrid in what was his 14th goal in his last 9 appearances in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Incredible.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

Caused Reece James and Fofana all sorts of problems down the left flank. The Brazilian had a hand in the opener and assisted Asensio for the second. Electric.

Substitutions:

Marco Asensio: 7.5/10 Came on to replace Rodrygo. The Spaniard scored almost instantly after coming off the bench. Super sub.

Antonio Rüdiger: 7.5/10 Came on to replace Camavinga. The German made a brilliant interception to deny Mason Mount late on.

Dani Ceballos: N/A Came on to replace Luka Modric.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: N/A Came on to replace Toni Kroos.
