Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Andriy Lunin: 7/10

A quiet night for the Ukrainian who was rarely threatened throughout. Made a decent save to deny Inaki Williams early on in the second half.

Dani Carvajal: 6.5/10

A decent shift from the Spaniard. Carvajal wasn’t quite at his best but did enough.

Antonio Rüdiger: 7/10

Another very solid performance from the German who marshalled Guruzeta and Inaki extremely well. Rudiger is every centre forwards nightmare.

Nacho Fernandez: 6.5/10

Nacho made a number of important interventions and was relatively solid throughout. Was a little rash at times.

Ferland Mendy: 6.5/10

Mendy defended well and was good on the ball, completing 94% of his passes.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

Valverde worked hard on and off the ball and showed a couple of nice touches. Came off with a knock.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 7/10

Tchouaméni was solid at the base of Madrid’s midfield diamond and came close to scoring with a header from a corner shortly before half-time.

Toni Kroos: 7.5/10

Toni Kroos ran the show once again and played a few remarkable passes. The German initiated the play that resulted in Rodrygo’s second goal.

Jude Bellingham: 7/10

Bellingham frequently found himself surrounded by Athletic players which restricted his impact on the game. The Englishman provided the assist for Rodrygo’s second goal after the break.

Brahim Diaz: 7/10

Played a beautiful cross-field pass in the build-up to Rodrygo’s opening goal. Was unlucky not to have scored after hitting the post shortly after the break.

Rodrygo Goes: 9/10

Back to his scintillating best, scoring two brilliant goals to secure all three points for his team. Should’ve had a penalty or two but VAR was nowhere to be seen once again. The Brazilian’s form will be crucial in this final stretch of the season.

Joselu: 5/10 – Came on to replace Brahim Diaz. The Spaniard barely had a sniff.

Lucas Vazquez: N/A – Came on to replace Fede Valverde late on.

Luka Modric: N/A – Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.

Eduardo Camavinga: N/A – Came on to replace Toni Kroos late on.

Eder Militão: N/A – Came on to replace Carvajal for his first appearance in seven months following his ACL in the season opener. So good to have him back.
