Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

Made a number of big saves when City where dominating in the first half. Nothing he could do to save De Bruyne’s goal due to his line of sight being blocked.

Dani Carvajal: 7.5/10

Frustrated Grealish throughout the game with a plethora of tactical fouls. The Spaniard put in a good shift as he usually does in the Champions League.

Antonio Rüdiger: 8/10

Completely nullified Haaland’s impact on the game. The German matched the Norwegian physically and made sure he saw very little of the ball. Top class performance from Rüdiger.

David Alaba: 7.5/10

Pulled off a brilliant tackle early on in the second half to deny Haaland a dangerous goalscoring opportunity. The Austrian transmitted calm and composure in and around the backline. Solid.

Eduardo Camavinga: 8/10

A very energetic performance from the Frenchman who assisted Vinicius’ stunning opener with a sensational run down the left. Camavinga was excellent in the first half and continues to impress as a left-back.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

Didn’t have much of an impact on the game but his energy was crucial once again.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

One of those classic Champions League performances from Toni Kroos. The German played as the holding midfielder and provided Alaba and Rüdiger with the necessary protection they needed, registering two tackles and four interceptions. Brilliant once again.

Luka Modric: 7.5/10

Back from injury and back to dominating in midfield for Real Madrid. The 37-year-old put in a brilliant shift and was influential in helping Real Madrid move the ball forward.

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10

Had a few good moments on the ball but the Brazilian saw very little of it and therefore couldn’t make much of an impact.

Karim Benzema: 6/10

Karim demonstrated his brilliant movement in and around City’s box but lacked that cutting edge that he’s normally associated with in the Champions League.

Vinicius Jr: 8.5/10

Scored a stunning goal to give Real Madrid the lead in the first half. The Brazilian caused City the world of problems in the first half before eventually cooling off a little after the break. Special player.

Substitutions:

Marco Asensio: N/A Came on to replace Rodrygo late on.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: N/A Came on to replace Toni Kroos late on. Nearly scored with a stunning strike.

Nacho Fernandez: N/A Came on to replace Luka Modrić late on.
