Player Ratings: Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético Madrid – 2022/23

Alvaro Rodriguez rescues a point for Real Madrid with a late equaliser against 10-man Atlético Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Atletico’s Angel Correa was sent off in the 64th minute of the match for elbowing Antonio Rüdiger off the ball. The dismissal gave Atlético a moral boost, with Jose Maria Gimenez giving his team the lead just 13 minutes later.

Substitute Alvaro Rodriguez levelled things up before the end to earn a point for the Spanish champions.

The draw means Barcelona can extend their lead at the top of the table to ten points with a win against Almeria on Sunday.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 6/10

Quiet game for the Belgian who didn’t really get tested at all during the ninety minutes. Not much he could’ve done to stop Gimenez’s powerful header.

Dani Carvajal: 6/10

Made a few good runs forward and was solid in defence but the Spaniard didn’t really offer much in attack.

Eder Militao: 6/10

Both Militao and Alvaro were marking Atleti’s Gimenez but didn’t do enough to stop the Uruguayan. Eder should’ve done a lot better.

Antonio Rüdiger: 6/10

A relatively quiet outing for the German defender. Rüdiger was rarely troubled by Atletico’s forwards.

Nacho: 6/10

Nacho started at left-back in the wake of Mendy and Alaba’s absence. The Spaniard put in a decent shift but didn’t offer much going forward.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

Valverde put in a good performance in midfield, using his energy and athleticism to help Real Madrid assert themselves on the game. The Uruguayan’s attacking output was greatly reduced due to him not playing on the wing.

Toni Kroos: 6.5/10

Toni Kroos was the anchor in Madrid’s midfield tonight and was at the heart of every move in the middle of the park. Decent shift from the German.

Dani Ceballos: 6.5/10

Started tonight’s game as Ancelotti looked to rest Modric and Camavinga for Thursday’s Clasico. The Spaniard put in a good performance in the first half but his level dropped after the interval.

Marco Asensio: 4/10

Had a good chance or two in the first half but never really made much of an impact.

Karim Benzema: 4/10

Benzema was completely anonymous throughout the game and had little to no impact on proceedings.

Vinicius Jr: 5/10

If Vinicius is stopped, Real Madrid suffer a huge amount and that’s exactly what happened tonight. The Brazilian couldn’t trouble Atleti’s defenders.

Substitutions:

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 6/10 Came on to replace Asensio.

Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos.

Luka Modric: 7/10 Came on to replace Ceballos. The Croatian assisted Alvaro’s equaliser.

Alvaro Rodriguez: 7/10 Came on to replace Nacho. The youngster scored Real Madrid’s late equaliser with a brilliant header.

Lucas Vazquez: N/A Came on to replace Carvajal late on.
