Player Ratings: Real Madrid 0-0 Villarreal – 2021/22

Real Madrid are held to a goalless draw at home to Villarreal as Emery’s side frustrate the hosts.

It was a game of very few chances but a large majority of those chances were created by Villarreal. The visitors had the better opportunities in the first-half and came close through Danjuma who saw his effort saved by Courtois.

With the score being 0-0 at half-time, Ancelotti decided to switch things up and bring on Camavinga in place of Rodrygo. Despite the change, Real Madrid struggled to create chances and were ultimately held at home by last season’s Europa League winners. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 8/10

A busy night for the Belgian. Courtois made two big saves in the first-half which kept Real Madrid in the game.

Fede Valverde: 7/10

A surprise selection at right-back. The Uruguayan put in a decent shift but Real Madrid sorely missed his presence in the middle of the park.

Eder Militao: 8/10

A solid performance at the back, arguably his best of the season so far. The Brazilian was embroiled in a physical battle with Danjuma throughout the match and came out on top.

David Alaba: 7.5/10

Just like Militao, the Austrian put in a solid performance. Alaba made a number of key tackles and clearances which helped his team keep a clean sheet.

Nacho: 7/10

Started at left-back tonight. The Spaniard put in a good defensive performance but lacked quality going forward.

Luka Modric: 6/10

An unusually quiet night for the Croatian. Luka found it difficult to get things moving in the middle of the park and made little to no impact on the game.

Casemiro: 6/10

Despite being rested in midweek, Casemiro was far from his best tonight. The Brazilian didn’t look comfortable and struggled to stamp his authority in the middle of the park.

Marco Asensio: 6/10

After his incredible performance against Mallorca on Wednesday, Asensio failed to come close to that level tonight. The Spaniard saw very little of the ball and never really got going.

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10

Came close to scoring in the first-half with a brilliant cross but didn’t produce much other than that. Replaced by Camavinga at half-time.

Karim Benzema: 6/10

With Real Madrid losing the midfield battle and only managing 49% possession on the night, it’s no surprise that Karim had a difficult game. The Frenchman had just 28 touches throughout the 90 minutes and wasn’t able to work his magic.

Vinicius Jr: 7/10

Arguably Madrid’s most threating attacker on the night. The Brazilian didn’t quite reach the standards he has set himself this season but at times he was the only one trying to make things happen in attack.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 Came on to replace Rodrygo for the second-half. The Frenchman was introduced to help Real Madrid get more control of the game.  The youngster misplaced a number of easy passes and wasn’t quite up to scratch tonight.

Eden Hazard: 6/10 Came on to replace Modric as Ancelotti looked to inject some creativity into his side. The Belgian saw very little of the ball and didn’t make much of an impact.

Isco: N/A Came on to replace Asensio late on.
