Player Ratings: Rayo Vallecano 3-2 Real Madrid – 2022/23

Real Madrid suffer their first defeat in LaLiga this season, losing 3-2 to an excellent Rayo Vallecano side at the Vallecas Stadium.

After an early goal from Rayo, goals from Luka Modric and Eder Militao turned the game around for Real Madrid. The away sides lead lasted for just five minutes with the home side equalising just before the break.

Things went from bad to worse for Ancelotti’s men in the second-half. Despite Courtois saving Oscar Trejo’s first attempt, a retake was ordered as Carvajal was inside the box before the ball was kicked. The Belgian guessed the right way again, but Trejo’s kick squeezed in.

Real Madrid couldn’t find an answer to the Rayo penalty, registering zero shots on target in the second-half. The result means Barcelona stay top of LaLiga two points clear of Los Blancos.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 4/10

Should have done better for the first two goals that Rayo scored, especially the second one. Saved Trejo’s initial penalty but it ended up being retaken because Carvajal entered the box before the spot kick was taken.

Dani Carvajal: 2/10

Shocking performance from the Spaniard who wasn’t at the races at all tonight. Gave away the penalty that cost Real Madrid the game and was the reason it had to be retaken.

Eder Militao: 7/10

Scored Real Madrid’s second goal of the game and made a few crucial interceptions to keep Rayo at bay. Could’ve easily been 4 or 5 for Rayo without the Brazilian.

David Alaba: 5/10

Not much to say about the Austrian’s performance. The former Bayern man should use his leadership to better organise his backline.

Ferland Mendy: 5/10

Didn’t offer much going forward and wasn’t the most reliable in defence either. Average.

Luka Modric: 4/10

Scored Real Madrid’s first goal from the penalty spot. His goal aside, Modric was a few miles off his usual level and should have been subbed a lot earlier. A rare poor performance.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 4/10

His first start since recovering from his recent injury. Based on his performance, the Frenchman was clearly not fully fit. His positioning was far from perfect and he failed to provide cover to his backline.

Fede Valverde: 4/10

Very quiet performance from the Uruguayan. Fede was relatively anonymous throughout the game and failed to make any sort of impact.

Marco Asensio: 8/10

The only player who can leave this game with his head held high. The Spaniard was the only player who made a difference moving forward and played a part in both of Madrid’s goals. Excellent showing.

Rodrygo Goes: 3/10

A shocker from Rodrygo. The Brazilian provided nothing going forward and missed a number of clear-cut scoring opportunities. Poor.

Vinicius Jr: 3/10

From the word go, Vinicius’ head wasn’t in the game. The Brazilian was more concerned about Rayo’s players and the referee than focusing on his game. Terrible performance.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga: 5/10 Came on to replace Tchouameni. The Frenchman had no impact on the game.

Mariano Diaz: N/A Came on to replace Modric late on.

Nacho Fernandez: N/A Came on to replace Mendy late on.

Lucas Vazquez: N/A Came on to replace Dani Carvajal late on.
