Player Ratings: Liverpool 0-1 Real Madrid – Champions League Final 2021/22

Real Madrid won their 14th Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool in what was yet another memorable night for Los Blancos.

Vinicius Jr scored the only goal of the game midway through the second-half after Federico Valverde fired the ball across the face of goal, giving the Brazilian a tap-in at the back post.

Thibaut Courtois put in a goalkeeping masterclass for Real Madrid, making a record nine saves including a couple of stunners to deny Mane and Salah.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 10/10

Astonishing performance from the Belgian. Courtois made save after save to deny Liverpool, making a total of nine saves – six of which were to deny Mo Salah. Unbeatable.

Dani Carvajal: 9/10

A performance reminiscent of Carvajal in his peak. The Spaniard put all his past injury woes behind him with a tremendous display of defending. Luis Diaz had pretty much no impact on the game thanks to Dani.

Eder Militao: 8/10

A lot of Madrid fans were worried about Militao’s form heading into this game but the Brazilian put all that to bed with his performance. The centre-back defended brilliantly against Liverpool’s lively front three, especially in the second-half.

David Alaba: 8/10

There was some uncertainty in the buildup to this game as to whether Alaba would be fit enough to start. The Austrian was however deemed fit enough to play and he looked to be in pretty good nick judging by his performance. The Austrian made a superb pass to Benzema for the goal that was disallowed and he was solid at the back.

Ferland Mendy: 7.5/10

Mendy struggled at times against Salah, but the Frenchman defended well and ultimately came out on top.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Another top class performance in a Champions League final. The Croatian’s influence on the game increased as the game went on and he played a crucial part in Madrid’s goal. Ridiculous player.

Casemiro: 8.5/10

Tonight was a game of two halves for the Brazilian. Casemiro struggled to get going in the first-half and looked very sloppy at times but he managed to turn things around and put in a brilliant shift after the break. Impressive turnaround.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

Toni Kroos was very efficient and reliable in midfield. The German rarely ever gave the ball away and got Real Madrid ticking in the second-half.

Fede Valverde: 9/10

Ancelotti recently stated that Valverde is untouchable in this team and the Uruguayan’s performance tonight showed us yet again exactly why that is the case. Fede put in an incredible shift in terms of work rate but also in the creative aspect of his game, assisting Vinicius for the opening goal.

Karim Benzema: 7.5/10

Karim Benzema has been the best player in the Champions League this season, but he wasn’t at his best against Liverpool. The Frenchman scored only for VAR to rule it out for offside. Regardless of his performance, Real Madrid securing the Champions League all but guarantees him the Ballon d’Or.

Vinicius Jr: 8.5/10

Scored the all important winner. The Brazilian ghosted in behind Alexander-Arnold to steer Real Madrid into the lead after a brilliant cross from Valverde. What a season for Vini.

Substitutions:

Eduardo Camavinga: N/A Came on to replace Valverde late on.

Rodrygo Goes: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on.

Dani Ceballos: N/A Came on to replace Modric late on. The Spaniard missed a great chance to score and make it 2-0.
