Player Ratings: Inter 0-1 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start, beating Inter 1-0 at the San Siro, thanks to a late winner from Rodrygo.

It was an evenly balanced game and both sides had their fare share of chances. Inter had a number of brilliant opportunities in the first-half but were denied by a string of wonderful saves from Thibaut Courtois. The game looked to be ending in a 0-0 draw until Rodrygo combined with Camavinga to strike home a volley in the 89th minute. Carlo Ancelotti will no doubt be delighted with the three points, especially since his side were made to struggle for it. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 10/10

Sensational performance. The Belgian made five saves, single handedly keeping Real Madrid in the game.

Dani Carvajal: 7/10

Started the game pretty poorly, especially defensively, but improved as the game went on. The Spaniard didn’t provide much in attack and was more focused on his defensive duties.

Eder Militao: 7.5/10

The better of Real Madrid’s defenders but the Brazilian found it difficult to deal with Dzeko. Missed a great opportunity to give Real Madrid the lead in the first-half.

David Alaba: 7/10

Back in the starting lineup after missing the last match with a knock. The Austrian didn’t look comfortable dealing with Dzeko and Martinez and this became even more difficult after he was booked.

Nacho: 7/10

Started tonight’s game as a left-back. The Spaniard didn’t look very comfortable and had a tough time dealing with Denzel Dumfries in the second-half.

Fede Valverde: 8/10

Real Madrid’s engine. The Uruguayan played on the right side of the midfield and ran his socks off, helping Real Madrid cope with Inter’s pressure.

Casemiro: 7/10

Lacked his usual presence and authority in the middle of the park. The Brazilian had a few shots from long range but nothing of note.

Luka Modric: 7.5/10

Luka Modric is integral to this Real Madrid side and Inter knew that. The Croatian was barely given any time on the ball and found it difficult to dictate proceedings. Replaced by Camavinga on the 80th minute.

Lucas Vazquez: 6.5/10

The Galician started the game to help Carvajal defensively but he didn’t have the impact Ancelotti would’ve hoped for. A rough night for Lucas.

Karim Benzema: 7/10

After such an exhilarating performance against Celta Vigo, Benzema was isolated for large spells of tonight’s game. The Frenchman’s link up play was as good as always but he didn’t quite have the impact he was hoping for.

Vinicius Jr: 7.5/10

Real Madrid’s most threatening player. The Brazilian was a constant headache for Inter’s defence whenever he got on the ball. Needed more support up top.

Substitutions:

Rodrygo: 7.5/10 Just like last season, it was the Brazilian who won it for Real Madrid. Rodrygo loves scoring in the Champions League, especially against Inter Milan.

Eduardo Camavinga: 7.5/10 Making his Champions League debut for Real Madrid. The young French midfielder made an immediate impact off the bench, laying off Valverde’s pass to Rodrygo for the winner. Camavinga already has a goal and an assist to his name after just 28 minutes played across 2 matches. Brilliant.

Marco Asensio: N/AReplaced Vinicius with seconds remaining.
