Player Ratings: Getafe 1-0 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid made the worst possible start to 2022 as an early strike from Enes Unal was enough to hand Los Blancos a 1-0 defeat away to Getafe on Sunday.

Real Madrid tried to impose themselves on the game but the hosts pressed high up the pitch as they looked to force Ancelotti’s men into a mistake early on. Getafe’s pressure payed off after Enes Unal outmuscled Eder Militao and fired home past Thibaut Courtois.

Luka Modric had Madrid’s best chances early on. The Croatian saw a strike from range go agonisingly wide before hitting the crossbar not long after. Carlo Ancelotti’s men continued to knock on the door without really testing Soria. Casemiro and Isco saw their efforts denied in the second-half and in the end the league leaders didn’t do enough to get anything out of the game.

The defeat means that Los Blancos’ 15-game unbeaten run in all competitions has come to an end and the Whites remain top of the LaLiga table with 46 points after 20 games played. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Not much he could do to stop Enes Unal from scoring. The Belgian played sweeper keeper in the second-half, helping out his defence and stopping Getafe from adding further insult to injury.

Lucas Vazquez: 6/10

With Carvajal still sidelined, Vazquez was tasked with helping out Asensio in attack down the right flank. The Galician often found himself in good positions but his crossing and final balls were not up to scratch.

Eder Militao: 4/10

At fault for the goal which ended up costing Real Madrid the game. The Brazilian was uncharacteristically sloppy and was way off the level that we’ve been accustomed to this season.

David Alaba: 6.5/10

The best of a bad bunch at the back for Los Blancos. Just like Militao, Alaba was unusually sloppy at the back and was not far off costing the league leaders another goal.

Ferland Mendy: 5/10

With virtually the entire Getafe team defending in their own half, Mendy’s defensive ability wasn’t needed. The Frenchman lacked creativity and threat moving forward which resulted in him getting substituted at half-time.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Real Madrid’s best player in what was a pretty poor performance from Los Blancos. The Croatian was targeted by Getafe but that didn’t stop him from influencing the game. Modric hit the crossbar in the first-half and came close to scoring with a couple of long range shots.

Casemiro: 7/10

Back from suspension and straight back into the starting XI. Casemiro put in a decent defensive performance although he did find it hard to deal with Getafe’s energy at times. Came close to scoring with a brilliant volley but Soria was equal to it.

Toni Kroos: 7/10

Not the worst of performances but also not quite what we expect from the German. Toni was a little sloppy with some of his passes and his set piece deliveries weren’t very convincing.

Marco Asensio: 4/10

Barely contributed anything to the game before getting substituted at half-time.

Karim Benzema: 4.5/10

Way below his usual standards. The Frenchman was particularly poor in the first-half before showing some signs of improvement after the break but not enough to turn things around for his team.

Rodrygo Goes: 4/10

With Vinicius out due to Covid, Rodrygo got to start on the left-wing. Just like Asensio and Benzema, the Brazilian struggled to make much of an impact at all.

Substitutions:

Marcelo: 6/10 Came on to replace Mendy at half-time. The Brazilian added some creativity down the left flank but it wasn’t enough to change the course of the game.

Eden Hazard: 6/10 Came on to replace Asensio at half-time. The Belgian was Madrid’s most threatening player on the pitch but Getafe never looked at any danger of conceding.

Mariano Diaz: 5/10 Came on to replace Rodrygo as Ancelotti looked to switch things up.

Isco: N/A Came on to replace Toni Kroos late on.

Peter Federico: N/A Came on to replace Lucas Vazquez late on.
