Real Madrid crash out of the Copa del Rey at the hands of Athletic Club thanks to an 89th minute winner from Alex Berenguer.

Real Madrid sat back for the majority of the game and showed no fight or desire to win. Carlo Ancelotti will undoubtedly be asked questions about his choice of starting XI and changes in the second half. Our player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

The Belgian’s first start in this season’s Copa del Rey. The Belgian made a number of decent saves but there was nothing he could do to stop Berenguer’s brilliant finish in the 89th minute.

Lucas Vazquez: 7/10

Preferred over Carvajal at right-back. The Galician put in a solid performance defensively, helping Real Madrid stay in the game until the very end.

Eder Militao: 9/10

Fantastic performance from the Brazilian. Militao made a number of huge tackles and blocks and the scoreline would’ve looked a lot worse had it not been for Eder’s great shift at the back.

Nacho: 7.5/10

Captained the team tonight in Marcelo and Benzema’s absence. The Spaniard put in a solid performance at the back but will be disappointed with his defending for Athletic’s goal.

David Alaba: 7/10

Started at left-back with Marcelo suspended and Mendy out injured. The Austrian didn’t offer much going forward but put in a decent enough performance at the back.

Luka Modric: 5/10

Very poor performance by Luka’s incredibly high standards. The Croatian couldn’t stamp his authority in the middle of the park and misplaced way too many passes.

Casemiro: 5/10

Just like Modric, Casemiro struggled against Athletic’s high press. The Brazilian misplaced far too many passes and wasn’t effective at helping his team push further up the field.

Toni Kroos: 6/10

The best of a bad bunch in midfield. Kroos sprayed the ball around as he usually does but couldn’t impact the game at all.

Rodrygo Goes: 4/10

Very quiet performance from the Brazilian. Rodrygo had little to no impact on the game and looked tired after featuring for Brazil on Wednesday.

Marco Asensio: 4/10

Deployed as a striker in Benzema’s absence. The Spaniard failed to create any danger in attack.

Vinicius Jr: 4/10

Just like Rodrygo, Vinicius started tonight’s game despite featuring for Brazil just 48 hours earlier. The Brazilian looked tired and couldn’t impact the game at all.

Substitutions:

Isco: 5/10 – Came on to replace Vinicius. The Spaniard came close to scoring late on.

Eduardo Camavinga: 5/10 – Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Frenchman had little time to make an impact.
