Player Ratings: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid – 2021/22

Real Madrid look to have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after comfortably beating Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Karim Benzema, the hero from Madrid’s match against PSG in the last round, was the hero yet again. The Frenchman netted two stunning first-half headers, the first assisted by a brilliant cross from Vinicius and the second off a fine cross from Luka Modric.

Kai Havertz pulled one back for the blues just before half-time and it looked like Tuchel’s men would spark a comeback.

Karim Benzema however, had different ideas. The Frenchman took advantage of Edouard Mendy’s mess of a clearance to score a third from 25 yards out. The result means Real Madrid will be through to the semi-finals unless Chelsea manage to beat Madrid by three goals at the Bernabéu or force penalties with a two-goal victory.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 9/10

Another game, another Courtois masterclass. The Belgian put in an outstanding performance, making 4 saves with the highlight being his stop to deny Azpilicueta from range. Sensational.

Dani Carvajal: 8/10

One of Carvajal’s best performances in quite some time. One could argue that the Spaniard could’ve done better to stop Havertz from scoring but other than that, Carvajal was solid in defence and provided width in attack.

Eder Militao: 7.5/10

Got booked early on when he brought down Havertz which will see him miss the second leg. The Brazilian put in a solid shift but was forced off with an injury.

David Alaba: 7.5/10

Alaba struggled at times but his overall performance was excellent. The Austrian won his duels and was tidy as ever in possession.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

Solid as ever at the back and handled the dangerous Reece James quite well. A very good performance from the Frenchman.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Another big performance from the Croatian Benjamin Button. Luka assisted Karim Benzema’s second goal with a sublime cross and put in an impressive defensive shift. A tireless display.

Casemiro: 8.5/10

Arguably Casemiro’s finest display this season. The Brazilian ran the show tonight and there aren’t many players better than him when he’s in this kind of form. Kante and Jorginho were completely nullified by the former Porto man.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

Tonight’s performance from Toni is a lot more like what we’ve come to expect of the German. Toni linked the defence and attack quite well and put in a decent shift too, winning five out of five ground duels.

Fede Valverde: 9/10

A typical Fede performance. The Uruguayan gave his team so much fight, energy, and directness which were all crucial in earning such a great result tonight. Surely he’ll be getting more minutes after his showing tonight?

Karim Benzema: 10/10

Sensational. Hat-trick last time out against PSG followed by another hat-trick tonight. The best player in the world, without a shadow of a doubt. Karim is inevitable.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

Assisted Benzema’s opener with a brilliant cross. The Brazilian caused Christensen the world of trouble, so much that Tuchel ended up substituting the defender. His understanding with Benzema has become almost telepathic.

Substitutions:

Nacho: 7/10 Came on to replace the injured Militao. The Spaniard put in a solid shift and did well to put Lukaku off.

Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 Came on to replace Toni Kroos as Real Madrid looked to close out the game.

Gareth Bale: N/A Came on to replace Benzema late on.

Dani Ceballos: N/A Came on to replace Valverde late on.
