Player Ratings: Celtic 0-3 Real Madrid – 2022/23

Real Madrid kicked off their Champions League title defence with a hard-fought 3-0 win against Celtic in Glasgow thanks to second-half goals from Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard.

Things didn’t start off well for the champions after Karim Benzema limped off the field just 30 minutes into the game.

Celtic started strongly but the Scottish side were ultimately left ruing their missed chances. Real Madrid found their groove in the second-half and put the home side to bed in style.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Thibaut Courtois: 7/10

Despite Celtic causing Real Madrid all sorts of problems in the first-half, Courtois was barely tested in goal. A straightforward night for the Belgian who picked up his first clean sheet of the season.

Dani Carvajal: 8/10

Great performance from Carvajal who was up and down the pitch all night. The Spaniard assisted Hazard for Madrid’s third goal of the night.

Eder Militao: 6/10

Militao looked pretty shaky in the first-half and then ended up being substituted at the break with an injury.

David Alaba: 7.5/10

Solid performance from the Austrian who made a number of crucial last ditch interceptions. A real leader at the back for Real Madrid.

Ferland Mendy: 7/10

Struggled against Abada in the first-half but looked a lot more solid after the break. Overall, a decent performance.

Luka Modric: 8/10

Modric started slowly but his impact grew as the game went on. Scored Madrid’s second with his trademark trivela finish. Came off to yet another standing ovation.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 7/10

Aurélien’s Champions League debut with Real Madrid. The Frenchman kept things ticking in possession but didn’t look as comfortable as he was in the last few games.

Toni Kroos: 8/10

Back to his best tonight. The German made some brilliant cross-field balls and was heavily involved in the buildup to Madrid’s goals. Top performance.

Fede Valverde: 8/10

Started the game a little sloppily, just like most of his teammates, but improved with time. The Uruguayan assisted Vinicius for the opener in what was a replica of Vini’s goal in last season’s Champions League final and was a constant worry for the Celtic defence. Excellent display.

Karim Benzema: N/A

Limped off with an injury on the 30 minute mark.

Vinicius Jr: 8/10

Scored the all important opener for Real Madrid which knocked the life out of the Celtic players. That’s four goals in the Brazilian’s last four appearances. Big game player.

Substitutions:

Eden Hazard: 8.5/10 Came on to replace the injured Benzema. The Belgian scored Madrid’s third goal of the night and was involved in all three goals. Brilliant contribution off the bench and a big confidence booster for the player.

Antonio Rüdiger: 7/10 Came on to replace the injured Militao at the break. Rüdiger added stability to Madrid’s backline.

Eduardo Camavinga: 6/10 Came on to replace Tchouaméni. The Frenchman looked bright since coming on and added fresh legs to the middle of the park.

Rodrygo Goes: N/A Came on to replace Vinicius late on and nearly made it 4-0.

Marco Asensio: N/A Came on to replace Modric late on.
