Player Ratings: Atlético Madrid 3-1 Real Madrid – 2023/24

Atlético Madrid end Real Madrid’s perfect start to the 2023/24 season, defeating Ancelotti’s men 3-1 at the Metropolitano on Sunday.

Real Madrid put in a miserable and torrid performance and their lack of defensive awareness and depth in certain key positions was fully exposed by Simeone’s men.

The result means Real Madrid drop down to third place in the LaLiga table – one point behind league leaders Barcelona and Girona.

Player ratings:

Starting XI:

Kepa Arrizabalaga: 4/10

Didn’t come anywhere close to saving any of Atleti’s goals.

Lucas Vazquez: 3/10

Atlético Madrid toyed with Vazquez and scored all three of their goals from his flank.

Antonio Rüdiger: 4/10

Both Rüdiger and Alaba looked like they were playing as centre-backs for the first time in their careers. Ball watching for all three goals.

David Alaba: 4/10

A night to forget for the Austrian. The centre-back was all over the place and was dominated aerially. Should’ve done much much better for all three goals.

Fran Garcia: 5/10

Poor just like the rest of his teammates in defense. The left-back’s defending has been below average this season and that was the case again tonight.

Fede Valverde: 6/10

At times it looked like Valverde was playing as a striker and at other times he looked like he was playing at full-back. The Uruguayan’s performance summarised the team’s showing, a multitude of players out of position with no clear idea of what to do.

Toni Kroos: 6.5/10

Defended poorly and is clearly not a defensive midfielder, but Ancelotti seems convinced he is. Scored a stunner from range which turned out to be a mere consolation.

Luka Modric: 5/10

Started for the second consecutive game. The Croatian showed his age with a very poor performance and was hooked at the break.

Eduardo Camavinga: 5/10

Scored only for it to be disallowed for offside. The Frenchman was poor throughout and added nothing to the game.

Jude Bellingham: 5/10

Played out of position in a more advanced role. The Englishman looked lost and had zero impact on the game.

Rodrygo Goes: 6/10

Rodrygo played tonight’s game as a lone striker and lacked support throughout. The Brazilian’s performance improved significantly after the introduction of Joselu in the second half.

Substitutions:

Joselu: 6/10 Came on to replace Modric. The Spaniard helped Real Madrid create more danger in attack.

Aurélien Tchouaméni: 6/10 Came on to replace Camavinga. The Frenchman added some much needed energy and presence to the middle of the park. Should’ve started.

Nacho Fernandez: 5/10 Came on to replace Vazquez to shore up the right side.

Ferland Mendy: 4/10 – Came on to replace Fran Garcia. The Frenchman was awful.

Brahim Diaz: 6/10 – Came on to replace Toni Kroos. The Spaniard should’ve been brought on a lot earlier.
