2022/23 Champions League: Who can Real Madrid face in the group stage?

The Champions League returns next month and as always, Real Madrid will be relishing the opportunity to fight for the European Cup. The reigning Champions will find out their opponents for the 2022/23 Champions League group stage on Thursday. The draw will take place in Istanbul at 17:00 BST. The competition will kick-off on 6 September and the last matchday of the Group Stage will be played on 2 November.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2022/23 Champions League group-stage draw and who Real Madrid could face:

When is the Champions League 2021/22 group stage draw?

The Champions League 2022/23 group stage draw will take place on Thursday August 25, 2022. The draw proceedings will commence at 7pm BST (18.00 CET). UEFA will also present awards to the best players, teams and coaches of the 2021/22 competition.

The Champions League draw will be livestreamed on UEFA’s website.

How does the draw work and who could Real Madrid face?

The draw features 32 teams. The teams will be split into four pots. Pot 1 consists of the holders (Real Madrid), the Europa League winners (Eintracht Frankfurt) and the champions of the six highest-ranked nations who did not qualify via one of the 2021/22 titles; Pots 2 to 4 are determined by the club coefficient rankings. No team can play a side from their own domestic league.

Group stage draw pots:

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, Manchester City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, PSG, Porto & Ajax.

Real Madrid are in Pot 1 so they cannot face any of the seven teams included.

Pot 2: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, RB Leipzig & Tottenham.

Real Madrid cannot be drawn against Barcelona, Atletico or Sevilla so that means Madrid will face one of Liverpool, Chelsea, Juventus, RB Leipzig or Tottenham.

Pot 3: Borussia Dortmund, RB Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Benfica, Sporting CP & Bayer Leverkusen.

Real Madrid will be able to face any of the teams from Pot 3.

Pot 4: Olympique Marseille, Club Brugge, Celtic, Victoria Plzen, Maccabi Haifa, Dinamo Zagreb, Copenhagen & Rangers.

Real Madrid will be able to face any of the teams from Pot 4.

When does the Champions League 2022/23 group stage start?

The Champions League 2022/23 group stage will kick-off with matches on Tuesday September 6 and Wednesday September 7.

Matchday 2: 13/14 September

Matchday 3: 4/5 October

Matchday 4: 11/12 October

Matchday 5: 25/26 October

Matchday 6: 1/2 November
